Angela Kelly, designer, dressmaker and milline

Devo fare una premessa: ho un debole per Sua Maestà la Regina Elisabetta II. E per il suo look inconfondibile. Da venti anni dietro questa immagine c’è Angela Kelly. Il suo titolo è quello di “personal assistant, advisor and curator to The Queen” e si occupa non solo degli abiti ma dello stile di Sua Maestà.
Nata a Liverpool da una famiglia molto umile, non ha avuto una istruzione superiore. Ha cambiato molti lavori, fino a quando nel 1991, lavorando come governante per ambasciatore britannico a Berlino, incontra Sua Maestà Elisabetta.
In qualità di governante presso residenza dell’ambasciatore, Angela è incaricata di preparare la camera della Regina Madre e di assisterla per ogni sua esigenza personale. La Regina rimane colpita dall’efficienza e dalla professionalità di Angela e quando qualche anno dopo Angela tornerà in Inghilterra per motivi personali, la Regina le offrirà il ruolo di sua assistente personale.
Si è sposata tre volte, ha avuto tre figli che sono stati cresciuti da uno dei suoi tre mariti. Viene descritta da tutti come una lavoratrice instancabile, una donna che ha sempre saputo rimboccarsi le maniche, che ha affrontato le difficoltà della vita a testa bassa.Una vera autodidatta (ha imparato a cucire dalle donne della sua famiglia), dotata indubbiamente di grande intelligenza e determinazione.
Queste qualità, unite ad una indiscutibile fedeltà e lealtà, spiegano la scelta della Regina e la sua stima personale nei confornti di Angela che, non a caso, è stata nominata luogotenente dell’Ordine Reale Vittoriano (Royal Victorian Order).
La signora Angela Kelly è anche consulente della Duchessa di Cambridge: a lei ha suggerito, su esempio della Regina, di cucire dei pesi negli orli degli abiti per evitare che vengano sollevati dal vento in occasione delle cerimonie ufficiali. E l’anno scorso il piccolo Prince George di Cambridge è stato battezzato in un abito, cucito da Angela, che è una copia dell’abito da battesimo in pizzo ideato per la figlia maggiore della regina Vittoria nel 1841, indossato da quasi tutti i membri della famiglia reale, ma ora troppo delicato da usare.

“Vengo da umili origini e spero di restare umile.”
In queste parole di Angela Kelly c’è, per me, la sua grande lezione.

I have to make an introduction: I have a weakness for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. And for Her unique look. Since twenty years, behind this look there is Angela Kelly. She has the title of “personal assistant, curator and advisor to The Queen” and she takes care not only of the clothes but the style of Her Majesty.
Born in Liverpool from a very humble family, she did not have a higher education. She changed many jobs, until in 1991, working as housekeeper for British Ambassador in Berlin, she meets Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
As housekeeper at ambassador’s residence, Angela was responsible for preparing the room of the Queen Mother and assist for Her personal needs. The Queen was impressed by the efficiency and professionalism of Angela and a few years later, when Angela returns to England for personal reasons, the Queen will offer the role of Her personal assistant.
She married three times, she had three children who were raised by one of her three husbands. She is described by all as a tireless worker, a woman who has always been able to roll up their sleeves, who has faced the challenges of life head down.
A true autodidact (she learned to sew from the women of her family), which has undoubtedly of great intelligence and determination.
These qualities, combined with an unquestionable loyalty, explaining the choice of the Queen and Her consideration for Angela who, not surprisingly, has been appointed Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian (Royal Victorian Order).
Ms. Angela Kelly is also a consultant to the Duchess of Cambridge: she suggested, on example of the Queen, sewing weights in the hems of dresses to prevent them being lifted by the wind during the official ceremonies.
And last year the little Prince George of Cambridge was baptized in a dress, sewn by Angela, which is a copy of the lace christening gown designed for the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria in 1841, worn by almost all members of the Royal Family, but now too delicate to use.
